Armenian Metsamor nuclear power plant poses threat to region - expert

The operation of the Metsamor nuclear power plant (NPP) in Armenia poses a threat to the region, Ilgar Valizade, head of the South Caucasus club of political scientists, told TurkicWorld.

According to Valizade, regional experts have repeatedly stated that the operation of the plant poses a danger to the countries of the region.

"The lifetime of the Metsamor nuclear power plant has long expired. Armenia finds various pretexts to extend the operation of the plant. Armenia must close this nuclear power plant and safely decommission it,” he said. The Metsamor nuclear power plant doesn’t meet modern requirements, and the equipment installed on it is outdated.”

“Environmental authorities of Azerbaijan, Russia, Georgia, and Iran are seriously dealing with this issue. Nevertheless, the Metsamor NPP continues to threaten the ecological security of the region," added the expert.
