BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 9. The Western Azerbaijan Community has issued a statement on the occasion of National Flag Day, TurkicWorld reports.
"Today, Azerbaijan celebrates the National Flag Day. Our tricolor flag, reflecting the values and ideals of the Azerbaijani people, is a beacon of development, security, and independence for our state, a light that confidently guides our people toward the future.
The national flag of Azerbaijan was approved at a meeting of the government of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic on November 9, 1918, and had state status until April 1920.
At a session on November 17, 1990, Heydar Aliyev, the National Leader of our people and Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, spearheaded the adoption of this flag as the national flag of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
On February 5, 1991, at the proposal of the Supreme Assembly, the Parliament of Azerbaijan declared it the national flag of Azerbaijan.
"Under the leadership of national leader Heydar Aliyev and President Ilham Aliyev, systematic steps have been taken and continue to be taken to promote the national flag as a sacred national symbol. According to a decree signed by President Ilham Aliyev in 2009, November 9 is celebrated annually as National Flag Day of Azerbaijan.
In accordance with a decree signed by the head of state in 2007, the flag square opened in 2010, and the flag museum created there occupies a special place in promoting our national symbols.
Our people's respect for the tricolor flag of Azerbaijan is at the highest level, not only as a symbol but also as a sacred value that reflects their freedom, unity, and will.
The fact that our people united closely around the victorious Supreme Commander-in-Chief and restored the territorial integrity of our country under this flag was undoubtedly the highest expression of respect for the national flag. We should remind that President Ilham Aliyev said in his historic speech at the opening of the Flag Square in 2010: "After the restoration of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, our state flag will be hoisted in the lands still under occupation now. Our state flag will be hoisted in Nagorno-Karabakh, Khankandi, and Shusha." Our national flag now proudly flies in all corners of our country, including Shusha, Khojaly, and Khankendi."
The statement noted that the head of state visited the Flag Square, which reopened in its new form and layout following renovation and restoration work, and examined the historical flags of Azerbaijan, including the flag of the Iravan khanate, in the Flag Museum.
The Western Azerbaijan Community, which unites Azerbaijanis who were forced to leave their homeland due to the ethnic cleansing carried out by the Armenian government, expresses its deep gratitude to President Ilham Aliyev for his unequivocal support for the right to a peaceful, safe, and dignified return," added the statement.
