Several open issues hinder signing of peace treaty with Armenia - Azerbaijani FM

BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 26. Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov met with the High Representative of the UN Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) Miguel Ángel Moratinos within the framework of participation in the High-Level Week of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly on September 25, 2024,TurkicWorld reports.

The meeting discussed issues on the agenda of the current cooperation between Azerbaijan and UNAOC, plans and joint projects, as well as the current situation in the region in the post-conflict period.

"It was brought to attention that Azerbaijan successfully and fruitfully cooperates with UNAOC, and the activity of the High Representative, who personally contributed to the development of the dynamics of our cooperation, was emphasized.

The significance of cooperative projects carried out in this area was also emphasized, as was Azerbaijan's participation in the inter-civilizational discourse.

The other side was informed in detail about the current situation and realities in the region, as well as the normalization and peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the post-conflict period.

Furthermore, during the nearly 30-year occupation of its territories, Azerbaijan was observed to have suffered widespread and devastating consequences in both the humanitarian and cultural domains; its cultural heritage had been illegally altered, destroyed, and intentionally looted.

Meanwhile, it was mentioned that despite the severe humanitarian consequences of the period of occupation, immediately after the end of the conflict, Azerbaijan initiated a peace agenda and was the most active party in promoting the process of normalization of relations with Armenia.

The existence of a number of unresolved concerns that are impeding the signing of the peace deal was brought to light, most notably the ongoing territorial claims made by Armenia in a number of its legislative acts, including its Constitution.

In the course of the meeting, the sides also exchanged views on other bilateral and multilateral issues of mutual interest.
