BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 26. Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov met today with Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia, who is on an official visit to Azerbaijan, TurkicWorld reports, referring to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.
According to the information, the one-to-one meeting of the ministers was continued in an enlarged format with the participation of delegations from both sides.
"The meeting discussed the prospects for the development of bilateral and multilateral cooperation between the two countries, further steps in this direction, as well as the current regional situation.
Jeyhun Bayramov noted that in the 20 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Somalia, the increase in contacts, especially in recent years, between the two countries has played a positive role in discussing the prospects of cooperation. Following the agreement signed between Azerbaijan and Somalia on political consultations, the importance of using such mechanisms in expanding cooperation was emphasized.
Furthermore, it was noted that there is potential for the development of cooperation in several directions, including agriculture, fisheries, the oil and gas industry, green energy, humanitarian and educational spheres, the importance of mutual contacts, and the exchange of experience in this direction.
Additionally, it was mentioned that cooperation based on mutual respect, support, and solidarity within the framework of international and regional organizations, especially the UN, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Non-Aligned Movement, is gratifying. It was stated that during Somalia's non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council in 2025-2026, international efforts to maintain peace and security will be supported by Azerbaijan. It was also noted that Somalia can benefit from the educational scholarship programs of Azerbaijan within the framework of the Non-Aligned Movement and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
Moreover, it was emphasized that Azerbaijan is ready to cooperate with Somalia this year within the framework of its chairmanship of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).
Emphasizing that our chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement contributes to strengthening Azerbaijan's ties with African countries, Jeyhun Bayramov stated that the development of cooperation is one of our priorities, and Azerbaijan intends to expand relations with the African Union Commission in this direction.
Bayramov also briefed the other side on the latest developments in the region in the post-conflict period, as well as the reconstruction works carried out in the territories liberated from occupation and the challenges facing the peace process. Somalia's constant support of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan was noted with gratitude.
In the course of the meeting, the sides also exchanged views on other issues of mutual interest.
