BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 23. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul met his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, with discussions focusing on the regional conflict and navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Germany has also emphasized freedom of navigation through Hormuz in its recent diplomatic statements.
According to Germany’s Foreign Office, Wadephul called on Iran to engage constructively in negotiations aimed at finding a sustainable solution to end the regional conflict.
The German minister also urged Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz without conditions and ensure free, safe and toll-free navigation for all vessels.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a major focus of international concern because of its importance to global energy supplies and maritime trade. Recent vessel traffic through the waterway has fallen significantly compared with pre-war levels amid continuing regional tensions.
Germany and several international partners have maintained that disruption of shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, poses risks to global security and prosperity.
The meeting between Wadephul and Araghchi took place amid intensive diplomatic activity at the UN General Assembly, as international and regional actors seek ways to reduce tensions and advance negotiations.
