BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 7. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has expressed alarm over the resumption of attacks involving the United States and Iran and urged both sides to immediately return to negotiations.
Speaking to the Human Rights Council, Türk said he was “alarmed by the resumption of attacks” and warned of the growing humanitarian consequences of the escalating conflict.
He said reports of civilian deaths and injuries were particularly concerning, including an incident in Iran’s Hormozgan province where at least four people were reportedly killed at a wedding party during a US attack in Sirik.
Türk also warned that the consequences of the crisis extend far beyond the immediate conflict zone. He said the geopolitical and economic repercussions of the escalation were once again being felt around the world.
The UN official called on Washington and Tehran to end the cycle of military confrontation and return to diplomatic negotiations, stressing that the crisis could have been avoided.
