UK lawmakers demand new PM take action against Israel on Gaza genocide

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 23. Over 70 UK lawmakers have signed an open letter urging newly appointed Prime Minister Andy Burnham to acknowledge the findings of an independent UN commission which concluded that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, deliberately targeting children.

The letter calls on Burnham to follow the International Court of Justice (ICJ) advisory opinion from July 2024, which ruled Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories as unlawful. According to the ICJ, Israel must withdraw from Palestinian land, dismantle settlements, compensate affected Palestinians, and facilitate the return of displaced people.

The lawmakers are also demanding a full arms embargo, sanctions, and a ban on trade supporting Israeli settlements.

Peter Leary, deputy director of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, said: “For far too long, the British government has ignored its obligations under the Genocide Convention and ICJ findings while actively supporting Israel’s atrocities against Palestinians.”
