UTP Continues to Rise as a Prominent Destination for International Students in Malaysia

BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 13. Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), located in Seri Iskandar, Perak, continues to strengthen its reputation as one of the best private universities in Malaysia. UTP currently has an enrolment of about 6,500 undergraduate and postgraduate students, along with an additional 1,000 foundation students, TurkicWorld reports. The university has more than 25,000 alumni around the world. It has attracted increasing number of students who seek high-quality education and global experience. Established by Malaysia’s national energy company PETRONAS in 1997, the university has maintained a strong academic foundation in subjects such as engineering, science and technology, while also expanding its academic range to include business and information technology.

Over the recent years, UTP has established itself as a progressive organization that mixes academic instruction with practical relevance. One of the main reasons it attracts students from all over the globe is its close relations to PETRONAS, Malaysia's national energy organization, which offers them practical experiences and chances for career development.

Global Recognition and Academic Excellence
UTP's steady performance in international rankings demonstrates its dedication to excellence. UTP is ranked among the top 250 universities in the world by the QS World University Rankings 2025, with especially high rankings in the fields of engineering and technology. The university's commitment to sustainability, innovation, and social responsibility is further shown by its recognition in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings and QS Asia Rankings.

UTP offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs that are designed to meet the developing demands of the global labor market. Its core strengths lie in engineering, geoscience, technology, and business, with each program developed in close consultation with industry partners to ensure that graduates will have a vast number of job opportunities in the future. “UTP’s curriculum is industry-aligned and forward-looking,” said an academic representative from the Faculty of Engineering. “Our graduates are not only technically skilled but also equipped with critical thinking and leadership abilities that are highly valued in the international job market.”

A Smart, Sustainable Campus
The UTP campus, covering more than 400 hectares, is considered by many to be among Southeast Asia's most innovative academic buildings. Surrounded by natural settings and designed with modern architectural elegance, it combines environmental harmony with modern technology.

Modern labs on campus, such as the Institute of Sustainable Building (ISB), the Centre for Advanced Photovoltaic (CAP), and the Petroleum Engineering Labs, facilitate top-notch research and practical learning. Additionally, students have access to collaborative maker spaces, digital learning resources, and innovation centres that promote creativity. “A big part of this is leading the university to realise our new vision, to be at the forefront of technology education and research, enabling a better future and to deliver on our mission with a clear focus on being globally relevant and future-ready,” says university’s first president and chief executive officer, Mohamed Firouz.

Famous Alumni
The accomplishments of its alumni who have achieved success abroad further demonstrate UTP's global reach. One such individual is Henry Yew, a 2010 graduate in civil engineering who is currently employed in the United States as a façade structural engineer with Curtain Wall Design & Consulting in Texas. He attributes his success in creating intricate exterior wall systems to his early years at UTP, which equipped him with solid technical principles and a problem-solving approach.
Bharat Singh, an Indian international graduate who graduated from UTP in 2015 with a Master of Science in Information Technology, went on to establish the German IT and financial consultancy company BGOS Group. Singh describes his experience at UTP as a “turning point” in his life.

These success stories exemplify UTP’s expanding global reach, as its graduates go on to innovate, lead, and contribute to industries across continents — embodying the university’s mission to produce talent with a truly international mindset.

The Success Story of Azerbaijani Student Asiman Musayev at UTP
Asiman Musayev is an Azerbaijani student studying at UTP University. Since January 2020, he has been pursuing a degree in Oil and Gas Engineering at UTP. Having started his education at the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University, Asiman later became one of the winners of UTP University’s internal scholarship program. This opportunity allowed him to study at one of the world’s top universities.

Due to his outstanding academic performance, Asiman was deemed worthy of pursuing a PhD degree directly, without the need to complete a master’s program.
“UTP is a private university, and in my opinion, the attitude of professors here, as well as the overall quality of education and the learning environment, are truly excellent,” said Asiman.

“One of the things I like most is that the university is located in the jungle, surrounded by nature. And it’s always summer here!” he added.

Bright Future
Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, which combines innovation, diversity, and a global outlook, stands out as a model of excellence as Malaysia continues to develop itself as a regional centre for higher education.
UTP continues to be a top choice for foreign students looking for an education that equips them for leadership in a world that is changing quickly because of its emphasis on research-driven learning, international collaboration, and complete student development.
