Little-known Azerbaijani music comes to Belgium

Baku. TurkicWorld:

The Embassy of Azerbaijan has organised a concert of what is described as exceptional Azerbaijani mugham and folk music, reports TurkicWorld with the reference EuPoliticalReport.

It will be performed by Mansum Ibrahimov, one of the most impressive musical talents from Azerbaijan and a master of the mugham-opera genre.

He will be accompanied at the event at the city’s premier concert venue on 12 July by the magical sounds of kamancha.

For those unfamiliar with it, this is a bowed string instrument used in Azerbaijani music. Other traditional instrument will also featured, including the tar, which is a long-necked, waisted lute family instrument used in many cultures.

Azerbaijani Mugham, for the uninitiated, is inscribed into the UNESCO’s Representative List of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. It is a highly complex art form that weds classical poetry and musical improvisation in specific local modes.

Ibrahimov is well known for combining traditional Azerbaijani music with the verses and ghazals of prominent and romantic Orient poetry.

Ibrahimov will perform on vocals and will be accompanied at the event by three others: Elchin Hashimov (tar), Elnur Ahmadov (kamancha) and Kamran Karimov (naghara).

The cultural event has been organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Kingdom of Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg together with the Ministry for Culture of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Anyone interested should be aware that, from 6 July, Bozar changes its ticketing system. Tickets for all its activities can now be purchased on site at the Bozar box office in rue Ravenstein 18, Brussels.
