BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 11. The Ministry of Science and Education will discuss green education, the environmental literacy of students, the role of education in combating climate change, and other topics at events held in the framework of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), TurkicWorld reports.
Moreover, it was noted that on November 18, under the partnership of the COP29 chairmanship, the Ministry of Science and Education, UNESCO, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), with the participation of ministers of education of different countries, panels will be organized on "Greening education and climate change resilience" and "Measuring environmental literacy in the framework of international assessment". COP29 is also scheduled to host the second annual meeting of the Greening Education Partnership, an initiative launched by the UN in 2022 and joined by more than 90 countries.
The panel "Measuring Environmental Literacy in International Assessment" will discuss the initiative of the Ministry of Science and Education to measure the climate literacy of schoolchildren within the framework of the International Program for the Assessment of Student Achievement (PISA).
Thus, the Ministry of Science and Education, together with the OECD, initiated the development of a competency framework for measuring and assessing climate literacy for the next PISA, which will be implemented in 2029.
Meanwhile, on the panel "Greening Education and Climate Resilience," the Ministry of Science and Education, together with UNESCO, will organize a discussion platform on greening education, bringing every student to a state of climate resilience readiness. This discussion will include important components such as schools, curriculum, measuring students' knowledge and skills, and teacher training.
To note, a special place is given to education in the agenda of the session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which is taking place in Azerbaijan. Thus, Azerbaijan's initiative to include climate literacy indicators in PISA assessments, which is one of the topics of discussion, will serve to raise climate awareness in the education systems of various countries.
