BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 13. Swiss energy company Axpo has approved its first biomethane project in Italy, marking a significant step in the company's renewable energy expansion, TurkicWorld reports via Axpo.
The facility, located in the southern Basilicata region, will generate around 45 GWh of renewable energy annually and is slated to begin operations by the end of 2025.
The plant will be built in the municipality of Grottole, using agricultural waste from nearby farms to produce carbon-neutral green gas. This biomethane will be injected directly into Italy’s national gas grid, aiding the country’s transition toward cleaner energy.
The acquisition deal between Axpo and an Italian project developer was finalized in early September 2024, though financial details remain undisclosed. Italian firms, led by Atzwanger SpA and BiHcon, have been contracted for engineering, procurement, and construction, with work set to begin this month.
Axpo’s efforts to support decarbonization go beyond Italy. In Spain, the company operates a biomethane plant at the Torre Santamaría dairy cattle farm, which converts livestock manure into green gas. The plant currently feeds 26 GWh of biomethane into the Spanish gas grid annually, with plans to increase production to 115 GWh.
Additionally, Axpo expanded into Portugal’s biomethane market in April 2024, launching a project that will generate 15 GWh annually, also expected to be operational by the end of 2025.
Axpo's ongoing investments in biomethane across Europe underscore its commitment to renewable energy and support for national decarbonization goals.
