Azerbaijani Prosecutor General's Office сounts remains in spotted mass burials

BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 30. A total of at least 600 human remains have been discovered and recovered in Azerbaijan as of April 27, 2024, Seljan Familzade from the Prosecutor General's Office said at a briefing, TurkicWorld reports.

She explained that this figure includes 124 remains found in 2022, 133 last year, and 48 since early 2024.

According to her, genetic profiles were extracted during the investigation and stored in a database, and identification was carried out with genetic profiles extracted from biological samples taken from the families of missing persons.

The official noted that a total of 362 forensic medical examinations were conducted to clarify questions regarding whether the presented bones belong to humans, how many individuals they belong to, the cause of death, and others.

Besides, according to Familzade, a total of 318 forensic molecular genetic examinations were conducted (21 in 2023 and 12 since early 2024), of which 54 were related to remains handed over by Armenia in the cities of Shusha and Khankendi (one in 2024), 71 were related to remains discovered in liberated territories (20 in 2023 and three in 2024), and 193 were related to the remains of individuals buried in cemeteries of unknown martyrs within the country's territory.

Among them, 252 forensic medical examinations and 23 forensic molecular genetic examinations were conducted and submitted to the investigative authority, she added.

To recall, a mass burial was discovered in Khojaly district's Asgaran village in early February. Prior to that, another mass burial was discovered last summer in Shusha and on the grounds of Shusha Prison. Additional mass burials have been discovered in a variety of locations, including Saryjali village in the liberated from Armenian occupation Aghdam district, Dashalti village in Shusha district, Edilli village in Khojavand district, Farrukh village in Khojaly district, Yukhary Seyidahmadli village in Fuzuli district, Kalbajar, Aghdam, and other living settlements.

Moreover, after the liberation of the Khojaly district, many remains were discovered in mass burials.

During the latest excavations on the territory of Khojaly city, the remains of 21 people were discovered in a mass burial, and later in the village of Malibayli, eight people. To date, nine people have been identified
