BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 8. President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has sent a letter to US President Donald Trump marking the first anniversary of the historic Washington Summit, held on August 8, 2025, which laid the foundation for peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
In his letter, President Aliyev praised Trump's role in advancing lasting peace in the South Caucasus and normalising relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Aliyev said Trump's determination and political will helped bring an end to a conflict that had lasted for three decades and opened a new period of reconciliation and cooperation between the two countries.
The Azerbaijani president highlighted the trilateral Joint Declaration signed at the White House, the initialled peace and interstate relations agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, and the joint appeal that led to the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group.
He also underlined the importance of the TRIPP project, describing it as significant for expanding regional transport connectivity, multilateral economic cooperation and security.
Aliyev noted that tangible changes had taken place in Azerbaijan-Armenia relations over the past year. Restrictions on cargo transportation through Azerbaijan to Armenia were lifted, while Azerbaijani petroleum products, as well as grain and other goods from third countries, began to be transported to Armenia through Azerbaijani territory.
“We are witnessing the real benefits of peace in economic, trade and other areas,” Aliyev said, adding that Azerbaijan would continue working to strengthen peace and build mutual trust.
The president also described the August 2025 Washington meeting as a turning point in Azerbaijan-US relations, saying bilateral ties had entered a qualitatively new stage of strategic partnership.
Aliyev highlighted US Vice President J.D. Vance's visit to Azerbaijan six months later and the signing of the Strategic Partnership Charter, covering mutual investment, trade, energy, connectivity, transportation, artificial intelligence and security.
The Azerbaijani leader also welcomed Trump's decision to extend the suspension of Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act, describing it as an important step towards restoring historical justice.
Aliyev said Azerbaijan-US relations had reached their highest level in the 34-year history of diplomatic ties and thanked Trump for his contribution to building and deepening the strategic partnership.
He concluded by reaffirming Azerbaijan's determination to further expand its friendship and strategic partnership with the United States based on mutual trust, respect and support.
