Türkiye sees COP29 as turning point in climate finance - minister

BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 13. We are currently hosting one of the most highly anticipated COP meetings, with significant global expectations. We believe that this year’s summit agenda is especially crucial for countries that lack access to climate financing, said Murat Kurum, Minister of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change of Türkiye, TurkicWorld reports.

Speaking at an event titled "Türkiye Climate Review" as part of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), the minister emphasized the global expectations surrounding this COP meeting.

Kurum noted that Türkiye had been preparing intensively for COP29 throughout the year, collaborating with relevant institutions.

"Facilitating access to climate finance is crucial for a more just world. As Türkiye, we see COP29 as a turning point for climate financing. Over the next few days, we aim to establish new climate financing targets. Naturally, COP29 is significant in terms of what countries are doing to address the climate crisis. Transparency reports from countries entering a new era with the Paris Agreement are one of the most important topics of this summit," Kurum added.

To note, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) started in Baku on November 11. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system.

The acronym COP (Conference of Parties) stands for "Conference of Parties" and is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

A total of 198 countries are Parties to the Convention. Unless the parties decide otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
