BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 12. The Mediterranean is ready to take on the ambitious goal of achieving 1TW of renewable energy by 2030, which will significantly contribute to global targets, Jauad El Kharraz, co-chair of the Mediterranean Clean Energy Network and senior fellow at the ECCO think tank, said this at a panel discussion titled "Mediterranean Pulse: Accelerating Towards 1TW of Renewable Energy by 2030", TurkicWorld reports.
"In every crisis lies a unique opportunity - a chance to embrace a new era of clean and sustainable energy. At COP28, as you know, more than 130 countries committed to tripling renewable energy capacity to 11 terawatts," he said.
According to him, immediately afterward, regional organizations, industrial companies, think tanks, and civil societies on both sides of the Mediterranean came together to translate this aspiration into concrete regional efforts called Teramed.
"We first announced Teramed in Istanbul at the UFM Green Week last May and promoted it at many other significant events, such as the Mini-Europe Future Energy Dialogue in Munich in September, the Mediterranean Decarbonization Forum, events in Tunisia, and officially launched at the Sustainable Energy Week in Cairo last month," he said.
He added that the Mediterranean's transition from fossil fuels to clean energy is important for regions with abundant solar and wind resources.
