Youth engagement in addressing climate change issues must be ensured - Palestinian official

BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 11. The youth engagement in addressing climate change issues must be ensured, Palestinian Youth Climate Negotiations Lead Mohammed Usrof said during the Youth Forum of COP29 Leaders of the Youth Negotiators Academy in Baku today, TurkicWorld reports.

"My role as a representative of the youth, as a leader, or as a member of the youth electorate in general, is to recognize that by being here, I have a great deal of access. My only role here is to spread this access and ensure equal representation and equal access for myself and others," he explained.

He also noted that society needs to ensure that as many young people as possible can participate in this process, and also focus on the opportunities that can be achieved.

"As for false solutions to climate change, I would say that, in my opinion, we cannot address climate change when we can't even track what the emissions are at this time. These issues need to be highlighted in the UN space, and we need to see how we can try to institutionalize them a little more," Usrof added.

The opening ceremony of the much-anticipated COP29 conference has kicked off today at the Baku Olympic Stadium,

Representatives, leaders, and climate experts from around the globe gathered to mark the beginning of what is set to be one of the largest climate events of the year.

The decision to host COP29 in Azerbaijan was made at the COP28 plenary session held in Dubai on December 11 of last year.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, signed in June 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, aims to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The "COP" (Conference of the Parties) is the highest governing body responsible for overseeing the convention’s implementation.

A total of 198 countries participate in the convention. Unless otherwise agreed, COP is held annually. The first COP took place in Berlin in March 1995, with its secretariat headquartered in Bonn.
