Azerbaijan's State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture signs MoU with IFC

BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 30. The State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) have signed a memorandum of understanding focusing on green construction in Azerbaijan, TurkicWorld reports.

The MoU was signed during an international conference held as part of Climate Action Week in Baku.

The document was signed by the Head of the IFC Azerbaijan Office, Aliya Azimova, and the Chairman of the State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture of Azerbaijan, Anar Guliyev.

"I am delighted that IFC is working with the Government of Azerbaijan and the State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture on an important initiative to promote green construction in the country. The construction sector worldwide generates more than 40 percent of global CO2 emissions, half of which are related to the construction and operation of buildings and the other half to the production of building materials. In Azerbaijan, as in other developing countries, construction is an important driver of economic activity. However, it is necessary to involve both public and private structures in addressing the negative impact of this industry on the environment and people's quality of life,’ Azimova said.

She also emphasized that IFC has considerable experience in promoting green technologies in construction around the world. The organization has already invested more than $14 billion in green building projects, accounting for 12% of IFC's total climate commitments.

‘We are keen to support Azerbaijan in developing its first green building roadmap. We hope that this document will bring together the efforts of various actors - government agencies, financial institutions, construction companies, building materials manufacturers, and end users, creating a favorable ecosystem for all. This, in turn, will contribute to the sustainable and healthy development of the built environment,’ she added.
