BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 12. The UK has extensive experience in hosting COP events under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, as well as in developing green energy, and is ready to share this experience with Azerbaijan, the Head of the UK Embassy Mission at COP29 Nick Baker said, TurkicWorld reports.
He made the remark at the International Forum on Sustainable Development and Climate Innovation, organized by the British Chamber of Commerce in Azerbaijan (BCCA), in Baku today.
"In November 2021, the United Kingdom hosted the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26). The UK is among the global leaders in the use of 'green' energy, which powers 11 million British households.
The country has implemented 141 projects for the development of wind farms, solar power plants, and other green initiatives. Therefore, we are happy to share this experience with Azerbaijan," Baker reminded.
According to him, the UK’s experience in constructing offshore wind farms that the nation's experts are building both locally and in other countries will be particularly beneficial for Azerbaijan.
Additionally, as he explained, the new UK government (in office since July 2024) is successfully implementing green projects with the private sector as part of its plans to achieve decarbonization by 2030 and Net Zero (zero emissions) by 2050.
"The role of businesses in implementing government plans for the energy transition is critically important. This summer, several events were held in the UK capital to involve private companies in green initiatives. In particular, the London Climate Action Week took place in June. We are eagerly awaiting the Baku Climate Week.
Overall, there are many opportunities for cooperation between various UK and Azerbaijani organizations and companies to achieve global climate goals," Baker noted.
He mentioned that countries should consider economic growth while fulfilling their climate commitments.
"Energy security should be provided through green innovations and gradually transitioning to Net Zero.
"Implementing new innovations will help achieve the climate goals set for both 2025 and 2050," Baker pointed out.
In his opinion, there is close cooperation between the governments of the UK and Azerbaijan for the successful hosting of COP29.
"The November climate summit in Baku will be a major global event, during which world leaders and delegations will hold negotiations with long-term global significance," the UK representative added.
This November, Azerbaijan will host COP29. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Baku will become the center of the world and will receive about 70–80,000 foreign guests.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. COP—the Conference of the Parties—is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change. There are 198 countries that are parties to the Convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Germany's Berlin with its secretariat in Bonn.
