Eni launches gas production from Italy's largest offshore dev't project

BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 20. Eni has officially commenced gas production from the Argo Cassiopea field in Italy, TurkicWorld reports.

The gas, extracted from one of four subsea wells recently drilled in the Strait of Sicily, is being transported via a 60-kilometer subsea pipeline to the Gela processing plant. Once processed, the gas will be fed into the national grid, bolstering Italy's energy supply.

The Argo Cassiopea project, operated by Eni in partnership with Energean, has achieved production just three years after construction began. Notably, the entire production process occurs underwater, minimizing visual impact and maintaining near-zero emissions. A dedicated 3.6 MWp photovoltaic installation ensures the project’s carbon neutrality for Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

As a cornerstone of Eni's strategy, Argo Cassiopea enhances the use of domestic natural gas, contributing to Italy's energy security and offering a low-emission energy source.

The field's reserves are estimated at approximately 10 billion cubic meters of gas, with peak annual production expected to reach 1.5 billion cubic meters.
