Progress of Uzbekistan’s activity in the ECO

Uza. Today, Uzbekistan is undoubtedly one of the most active members of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO). Significantly, in recent years, the country’s presence in international events held under the auspices of the ECO has intensified. Official delegations of Uzbekistan constantly and effectively participate in meetings of prosecutors general, heads of maritime organizations, and ministers of transport, tourism, and agriculture.

2019-2021

Following the online Meeting of Transport Ministers in December 2020, Uzbekistan’s initiative to include road and rail transport corridors “Central Asia – Afghanistan – Pakistan”, “Central Asia – Afghanistan – Iran”, “Uzbekistan – Turkmenistan – Iran” into transport arteries of the ECO region was included in the final Declaration.

Uzbekistan has been allocated two quota positions at headquarters: Director of the Tourism Department – level D2 and Researcher of the Transport, Communications, Human Resources and Sustainable Development Department – level P3.

At the 241st Meeting of the Council of Permanent Representatives of member countries, which took place on September 4, 2019, in Tehran, the event participants unanimously voted to allocate these two positions to Uzbekistan (from April 2022, two of our representatives began working in the Secretariat).

On March 4, 2021, the 14th summit was held via videoconference under the chairmanship of Türkiye, where President Shavkat Mirziyoyev delivered a speech.

On November 28 this year, the President of Uzbekistan participated in the 15th summit, following which the chairmanship of the ECO in 2022 passed to Uzbekistan.

At a Meeting of the Regional Planning Council (January 17-26, 2022), at the initiative of Uzbekistan, 2022 was declared the “Year of Strengthening Connectivity”.

2022

The Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis participated in the Third Conference of the Parliamentary Assembly in Baku on May 17. A delegation led by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs took part in a meeting of deputy ministers in Tehran on May 22-24.

On July 5-6, the 7th Meeting of the Ministers of Agriculture was held in Tashkent under the chairmanship of Uzbekistan. Secretary General Khusrav Noziri also attended the event.

On December 13, the 4th Meeting of the Tourism Ministers of the member states was held online, during which Shakhrisabz was chosen as the tourism capital of the ECO in 2024.

2023

On January 24, the 26th Meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers was held in Tashkent, attended for the first time by the foreign ministers of all member countries of the Organization. Following the event, the Tashkent Communiqué was adopted. On the same day, the President of Uzbekistan received the ECO Secretary General.

On April 30, Khusrav Noziri took part as an international observer in the Constitutional Referendum of Uzbekistan. On September 8, as part of the International Conference on Food Security in Samarkand, he met with the Minister of Agriculture of Uzbekistan.

The 4th meeting of the ECO Prosecutors General took place in Baku on September 16. Prosecutor General N. Yuldashev led the Uzbekistan delegation.

The Uzbekistan delegation, led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, took part in the 25th informal meeting of the Council of Ministers on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on September 21 and at the 15th joint meeting of ministers of the ECO-ASEAN countries on September 22. On September 21, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan met with the ECO Secretary General.
