Baku. TurkicWorld:
The Baku port, as the first 'green' port certified by the European Port Association, is promoting the 'green' agenda in the Caspian and Black Sea region, Director of the Baku International Sea Trade Port (BISTP) Taleh Ziyadov said during a panel session at the Baku Climate Action Week, TurkicWorld reports.
He emphasized that the BISTP takes sustainable development seriously and participates in relevant UN initiatives, having joined the 'Ocean of the Future' initiative just last week.
"We have a climate strategy until 2035, and by that time, we aim to achieve net zero carbon emissions," Ziyadov pointed out.
He explained that the BISTP is part of the Middle Corridor and is committed to ensuring that this international transport route is "green."
"In fact, this means that all ports along the Caspian corridor should become 'green' by 2035," Ziyadov also said.
This commitment extends to railways, which also need to transition to "green" energy sources, he mentioned.
"For example, a container shipped from China should arrive in Europe using only 'green' and sustainable delivery methods," Ziyadov explained.
He also mentioned the port's development of a "green" city concept, as the port is a systemically important entity.
"This idea can be discussed during the events of COP29," Ziyadov added.
To note, the Middle Corridor has been under development since 2014 but has seen significant growth only in the last three years.
To further integrate the Middle Corridor into the global supply chain, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Georgia have established a joint multimodal transport company, which was recently joined by China.
