BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 3. The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) urges all enterprises in Azerbaijan's oil and gas sector to commit to reducing methane emissions, aiming for zero emissions by 2050, Head of Environmental Disclosures and Green Affairs Department at SOCAR Mustafa Gurbanlisaid, TurkicWorld reports.
He made the remark at the conference "Progress on Methane: Advancing Global Methane Reduction (AGMR)" within the Baku Climate Week in Baku today.
"SOCAR has made specific commitments to decarbonization in December 2023, aiming to reduce methane emissions to approximately 0.2 percent by 2035 and achieve Net Zero by 2050. We advocate for all operating companies in Azerbaijan's oil and gas sector to adhere to all international decarbonization commitments," Gurbanli highlighted.
He mentioned that SOCAR and bp are actively collaborating on the implementation of the Methane Guiding Principles (MGP), and this cooperation has yielded successful results, and together, these companies are working on implementing artificial intelligence for monitoring methane emissions and calculating emissions.
This program (working title 'Methane.AI') will be presented during COP29.
To note, methane emissions account for about 30 percent of the radiation issues affecting the ozone layer in the atmosphere.
A dedicated panel on the topic of methane, and several declarations are expected to be signed at COP29.
