Iran hints at new infrastructure necessary for new transit ways with Azerbaijan

New transit opportunities will arise between Azerbaijan and Iran, if the necessary infrastructure is built, Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran, Saeed Khatibzadeh said in press conference, TurkicWorld reports citing the ministry.

The spokesman noted that over the past few months, relations between the two countries have intensified. As a result, a meeting of the joint commission was held and a document was signed.

Khatibzadeh added that for the past 30 years, Azerbaijani citizens have been using Iran's part of the Bilasuvar border checkpoint (exists on both Iranian and Azerbaijani territory), traveling to and from Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan.

"After the end of the [Karabakh] war, the issue of crossing the territory of Iran using a point closer to Nakhchivan was raised," he said.

On March 11, 2022, the 15th meeting of the State Commission on Cooperation in Economic, Trade and Humanitarian Spheres between Azerbaijan and Iran was held in Baku.

After the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding on establishing new communication links between East Zangazur economic region and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic through the territory of Iran, as well as, a number of documents have been signed between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
